How to Prepare Your Garage Door for Winter: Weatherproofing Tips
As winter approaches, cold drafts and rain can make your garage cold and damp. Proper winterization blocks air leaks, reduces your home heating costs, and prevents ice from freezing your garage door to the concrete floor.
Your Winterization Checklist
Take these simple steps to weatherproof your garage:
- Replace the Bottom Seal: If your bottom rubber seal is cracked or missing chunks, cold air and pests will slide under the door. Replace it with a heavy-duty vinyl or U-shape rubber seal.
- Install Weatherstripping: Apply vinyl weatherstripping along the sides and top header of the garage door frame. This seals out wind-blown rain and drafts.
- Apply Low-Temperature Lubricant: Standard lubricants thick up in cold weather. Use a premium silicone spray that resists freezing to keep your rollers running smoothly.
