How to Secure Your Garage Door from Break-Ins While on Vacation
Your garage door is the largest entry point to your home. While you are away on vacation, burglars often target the garage because it provides an unmonitored space to break into the main house. Protecting this entry point is essential for total peace of mind during your travels.
Essential Security Steps Before You Travel
Ensure your home is locked down with these simple garage security measures:
- Enable "Vacation Mode" on Your Wall Console: Most modern wall-mounted garage button panels feature a lock button. Pressing and holding this button activates "Vacation Mode," which disables all wireless remote controls. Even if a thief attempts to clone your remote signal, the door will not open.
- Secure the Emergency Release Lever: Thieves can slide a wire coat hanger through the top gap of your door to pull the red emergency release cord. You can prevent this "fishing" method by securing the release lever to the carriage assembly with a simple zip-tie. In an emergency from the inside, the zip-tie can easily be snapped.
- Use a Physical Slide Lock: Engage the sliding manual lock bar located on the inside of the garage door track. This physically pins the door panel to the steel tracks, making it impossible to pry open from the outside. (Remember to unlock it before using your opener when you return!).
Upgrade to a Smart Opener
A smart garage door opener allows you to monitor and control your door from anywhere in the world. You can set up real-time notifications to alert you if the door is opened while you are away, allowing you to react immediately.
