How to Manually Open Your Garage Door When the Power Is Out

Pulling red emergency release cord

Pull the red emergency release cord to open your garage door manually during a power outage.

A power outage can happen at any time, leaving you unable to open your garage door using your remote or wall button. Fortunately, all residential garage door openers are equipped with a manual release system designed to let you open and close the door by hand in an emergency.

Step-by-Step Manual Release Process

Follow these steps to safely open your garage door manually:

  1. Make Sure the Door is Fully Closed: This is the most critical safety rule. Never pull the manual release cord if the door is partially open. If the torsion springs are broken, a heavy door can crash down with lethal force.
  2. Pull the Red Emergency Cord: Locate the red rope hanging from the opener trolley. Pull it down and slightly back toward the opener motor. You will hear a click as the trolley lever disengages from the drive chain or belt.
  3. Lift the Door Straight Up: Grab the door handle (usually located on the bottom or second panel) and lift the door. If the springs are balanced properly, the door should lift easily and stay open on its own.
  4. Lock the Door Manually: Since the opener is disconnected, the door is no longer locked. If you need to leave it closed, use the slide lock on the inside of the door panels to secure it.

How to Re-Engage the Opener

When power is restored, unlock the slide lock first. Pull the red cord straight down and forward toward the garage door to reset the lever. Then, press your remote button. The trolley will slide along the track and click back into place automatically.
