How to Remove and Prevent Rust Stains on White Garage Door Panels

Premium dark wood flush overhead garage door

Clean and paint white garage door panels to stop rust spots from spreading.

Over time, steel garage doors can develop small orange rust spots, especially along the bottom edge where moisture gathers. On white doors, these spots ruin your home's curb appeal. Addressing rust early prevents it from eating through the steel panel.

Removing the Surface Rust

To clean surface rust without damaging the paint finish:

  1. Wash the area with warm soapy water to remove surface dirt.
  2. Make a paste of baking soda and vinegar, or use a mild commercial rust remover like Bar Keepers Friend.
  3. Gently scrub the rust spots using a soft sponge (do not use steel wool, which will scratch the paint).
  4. Rinse the panel thoroughly with fresh water and dry it with a towel.

Preventing Future Rust Stains

Apply a coat of premium automotive paste wax to the panels to form a protective water-resistant barrier. If the paint has worn thin, apply a rust-inhibiting metal primer followed by a matching outdoor acrylic latex paint.
