California SB 969: Why Your New Opener Requires a Battery Backup
In July 2019, California Senate Bill 969 went into effect, changing garage door opener requirements across the state. This safety law requires all residential garage door openers sold or installed in California to feature a working battery backup.
Why Was SB 969 Passed?
During severe wildfires, power outages frequently shut down standard garage openers. Homeowners who were unable to lift their heavy doors manually were trapped inside their garages. SB 969 ensures that if the power grid goes down, your garage door will still open, allowing you to evacuate safely.
Fines and Compliance Rules
Professional companies are prohibited from installing non-compliant openers. Homeowners who install non-compliant models face fines of up to $1,000 per opener. The battery backup must supply enough power to cycle the door 50 times in a 24-hour period.
